AALJ AND SSA OFFICIALLY AT  IMPASSE

Friday afternoon, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service declared the AALJ and SSA at impasse in our contract negotiations. The next step will be for SSA to ask the Federal Service Impasses Panel to assert jurisdiction.

2019 CONFERENCE UPDATE – ADMIN LEAVE IN THE  WORKS

The Board is pleased that, even in these challenging times, we were able to keep the registration fee for our 28th Annual Education Conference at the same base rate as last year of $425. Considering that the National Judicial College is providing our general session training, this is an outstanding value. Conference registration is open on the website – AALJ.org.

Judge Matt Martin has met with counsel in OCALJ and the process for approval of our request for administrative leave for our conference has begun. We will have details on this in the coming weeks.

Check the website regularly for conference updates. In the coming days we will post the agenda and information about a dynamic spouses’ program.

CORRECTION – 2,000 HOURS OFFICIAL TIME PER YEAR IN SSA LAST BEST OFFER

In the last newsletter, it stated that the Agency offered 5,000 hours of official time per year in their last best offer. This was incorrect. The Agency actually offered only 2,000 hours of official time. This is a 20,000 hour reduction in official time. In no way could the Union meet its statutory representational duties with 2,000 hours of official time.

SSA GIANT HUMAN CAPITAL CHALLENGE IN THE   NEWS

We are deeply concerned that the American public will be the collateral damage in SSA’s attempt to eliminate their unions. The Federal News Network did a story on SSA’s giant human capital challenge and it can be read here. 97% of all judges at SSA do not believe anyone at headquarters cares about their well being or work-life balance. This in and of itself is a giant challenge that needs addressing. Morale does impact quality and productivity. We hope to work with the new commissioner to improve the climate in order to best provide critical service to the American public.
